Thomas Michael (Mike) Maynard, 64, of Mouth of Wilson, Va., died at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday, June 28, 2013.
He was born July 5, 1948, in Atlanta, Ga., to the late Thomas and Margaret Maynard of Bainbridge, Ga., where he grew up.
Survivors include his wife, Linda, of Mouth of Wilson; daughter, Lee and son-in-law, Mike Moran of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughter, Michaela and son-in-law, Bobby Jarrett of Greensboro, N.C.; daughter, Emily and son-in-law, Jonathan Gwinn of Morristown, Tenn.; five grandchildren, sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Rick Corbett of Canton, Ga., and Suzanne and Pete Morgan of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, Charles Maynard of Auburn, Ala.; andseveral nieces and nephews.
Mike graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1966 and Presbyterian College in 1970. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. After college, he entered the U.S. Army
, Field Artillery Division, achieving the rank of captain.
After 7 ½ years in the Army, he began a career in sales/marketing at Proctor and Gamble, Warner-Lambert, and Pfizer. He retired in 2000.
He served on the Grayson County (Va.) Board of
Supervisors for the Wilson District for the past 7 1/2 years and two terms as the chairman of the board. He served on numerous other community affairs, including Blue Ridge Crossroads Economic Development Authority, Carroll-Grayson-Galax Solid Waste Authority, Chief Local Elected Officials Consortium, Grayson County Emergency Management director, Grayson County Planning Commission, Workforce Investment Policy Board, Wired Road Regional Broadband Authority and chairman of the Heartwood Marketing Committee.
A memorial service was held at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va., on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 6 p.m., with visitation at 5 p.m. A visitation for family and friends in Bainbridge, Ga., will be held at Ivey Funeral Home on Saturday, July 6, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge, Ga., on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. Family graveside service will follow at Hopeful Cemetery in Hopeful, Ga.
