William Ardath Sumner, 88, of Woodlawn, Va., passed away on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, in Morristown, Tenn.
He was born July 27, 1925, in Carroll County, Va., to Elder Samuel Everett Sumner and Lena McCann Sumner.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Hawks McGraw; a brother, Alton Sumner; and sons-in-law, John Todd and Larry Bryant.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Doris Robinson Sumner; two daughters and son-in-law, Jeanette Sumner Smith and Johnny Smith of Morristown, Tenn., and Freida Sumner Bryant of Ashland, Va.; grandchildren, Mary Beth Bryant of Charlottesville, Va., Philip and Angela Smith, and Preston Smith of Morristown, Tenn.; and many dear friends and loved ones.
He was a member of the Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church.
"Bill" retired from Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. after 46 years of employment. He was also a life-long cattle farmer.
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Melvin McGrady and Elder Reuben Hawks officiating. Burial will follow in the Crooked Creek Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, from 6 until 8 p.m.
