Jo Gardner, 87 of Richmond and formerly of Hillsville, left this world on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, to join her husband, Rudy and their Lord in Heaven.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Rudolph Gardner; parents, Allen V. and Effie M. Largen Bowman; two brothers, Paul and Cassell "Tucker" Bowman; and nephew, Berlie Bowman.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James R. Gardner and Cheryle Cuddy Gardner; granddaughter, Cheryle Deneé Gardner Mortreux and husband, Sébastien; granddaughter, Ashley Kaye Gardner Fetterman and husband, Scott; two great-grandchildren, Sattara Olivia Mortreux and Stéphane Augustin James Mortreux.
Jo was a licensed hairdresser for over 50 years. She was co-owner with her aunt, Pauline Largen Webb, of the Corner Beauty Shop in Hillsville in the 50's. Until 2005, she operated a hair salon in her residence.
Since childhood, Jo has been a member of Gladesboro Lutheran Church, and she was the first woman to serve on the Church Council. She served in many other capacities, including Sunday school teacher, Church Women's Group and Counselor of the Luther League.
Also, she served as a Cub Scout den mother in Gladesboro in the 50's; Carroll County Elections Commission for many elections, and civic volunteer for many causes.
She was a member of the Hillsville Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW since 1983.
Jo was a person who was very loving towards her family and friends. She especially loved and took great pleasure in her granddaughters, Deneé and Ashley Kaye and her great-grandchildren, Sattara and Stéphane.
Family members and friends are invited to join the family for visitation on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville.
Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at 11 a.m., at the Gladesboro Lutheran Church, with Pastor Joseph Shumate as the officiating minister.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to Gladesboro Lutheran Church, 3486 Gladesboro Road, Hillsville, Va. 24343.
