Carolyn Johnson Rudolph, 83, of Independence, Va., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Sparta, N.C.

She was born Jan. 5, 1929, at Windsor, Va., in Isle of Wright County to John Letcher Johnson and Violet Fisher Johnson.
Moving with her parents at age 11 to Independence, she graduated from Independence High School in 1946 and Radford College in 1949, receiving a B.A. degree in elementary education.
She taught first, second and third grades for many years in the Grayson County Public Schools, teaching at both Fries Elementary and Independence Elementary Schools.
She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Independence.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lee Rudolph Sr.; both parents; and her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth J. Bailey and Andrew L. Bailey.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Ann Bryant and George Wright of Abingdon, Va.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jack L. Rudolph Jr., of Bowling Green, Ky., and Tony and Barbara Rudolph of
Rural Retreat, Va.; six grandchildren, Leah Wright of Abingdon, Va., Kent Rudolph of Columbia, S.C., Ashlee Rudolph and spouse Scott Nowicki of Boulder City, Nev., Rachel Rudolph of Las Cruces, N.M., Amy Rudolph Maloskey and spouse Joseph of Rural Retreat, Va., and Charlie Rudolph and spouse Sarah of Rural Retreat, Va.; niece Marcia Barrow of Salem, Va.; and two nephews R.J. (Bud) Rudolph III of Independence, Va., and Charles Bryant Rudolph and spouse Hilda of High Point, N.C.
A funeral service was conducted Saturday. Nov. 3, 2012, at 3 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Independence with the Rev. Terri Johnson Gregory officiating. Interment was in Independence Cemetery. The family received friends at the church one hour preceding the funeral service.
