Rev. Charles Eugene "Gene" Webb, 79
The Rev. Charles Eugene "Gene" Webb, 79, of Burlington, N.C., formerly of Galax, Va., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.
He was born in Austinsville, Va., to the late Robert and Magdalene Anders Webb.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Nancy Moxley Webb of the home; two daughters, Terecia Wilson (George David Wilson) of Prosperity, S.C., and Lisa Rand (Dr. Richard Rand) of Cookeville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, SSgt. George Patrick Wilson and Benjamin David Wilson of Prosperity, S.C., and Victoria Grace Rand of Cookeville, Tenn.; five brothers and sisters, Robert Webb, Bill (Juianna) Webb; Mickey Webb, Evelyn (Grady) Maxie and Nancy (Alan) DeAndrea; four sisters-in-law: Mary Webb, Loraine Kinzer, Lucille Payne (Billy) and Ramona Alderman; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He is pre-deceased in death by six siblings, Paul, Clarence, Danny, and Jimmy Webb, Joyce Johnson and Audrey Hundley.
The Rev. Webb was a veteran of the Koran Conflict serving in the United States Air Force for four years.
He was employed by Burlington Industries for 42 years as Plant Planning Manager at the Galax, Va., Plant and the Williamsburg Plant in Burlington, N.C.
The Rev. Webb accepted the call to ministry in 1957. He was ordained into the Baptist Church in 1964 at the Volney Baptist Church in Volney, Va., serving as a full-time pastor and evangelist for 50 years. His last pastorate was Riverdale Baptist Church in Burlington, N.C., where he served as pastor for 18 years. Over his 50-year ministry, Rev. Webb pastored 17 other churches in both Virginia and North Carolina. Churches included: Galax Wesleyan Methodist, West Galax Methodist, Asbury Methodist, Leonard Memorial Methodist, Long View Methodist, Peach Bottom Methodist, Grant Methodist, Little Wilson Methodist, Mill Creek Methodist, Troutdale Methodist, New Hope Methodist, Grubbs Chapel Baptist, Sturgills Baptist, Crockett Baptist, First Baptist of Speedwell, Summit Baptist and Beech Grove Baptist.
The funeral service was held on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at 4 p.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel located on South Church Street in Burlington, N.C., with Dr. William Simpson and the Rev. Stephen Hall officiating. The family received friends immediately following the service at the funeral home and other times at the home.
A viewing was held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Independence, Va., on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, from 1:45 until 2:30 p.m. A service followed at 2:30 p.m. with burial in the church cemetery. The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the committal service. The Rev. Ted Anders, the Rev. Bob Adams and the Rev. Charles Bunn officiated.
The family would like to offer their sincere thanks and appreciation to all of Rev. Webb's caregivers, including John Turner, Johnnie Faye Ellison, Ricky Alexander, Stacey Benton, Cheryl Troxler, Marie Willis and numerous others.
The family would also like to thank the many health care professionals at Alamance Regional Medical Center and Duke University Hospital.
The family also extends their sincere thanks and appreciation to the many wonderful neighbors and friends who supported them during Rev. Webb's extended illness.
