Foy Eugene Cassell (1921 - 2013)

On Thursday, April 4, 2013, Foy Eugene Cassell, 91, of Hillsville, was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He was born in Hillsville on Nov. 27, 1921, to Nancy Edith Goad and Luther Bowman.
Cassell was a decorated World War II veteran and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star for his bravery on the battlefield during the Pacific Theater of Operations. He enlisted in the Army on Aug. 28, 1942, and served until he was honorably discharged on Nov. 9, 1945.
He retired as a jailer for the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. It was there that he began his true passion, ministering to others and sharing the love of Christ. Over the years Cassell served as a lay minister at local nursing homes and various churches in the community, fulfilling what he believed was the most important mission of all - spreading the gospel.
He was a long time member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hillsville and True Vine Baptist Church in Mount Airy, N.C.
Cassell was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post and Carroll County Senior Citizens. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and visiting the elderly who were homebound or in nursing homes.
Cassell is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Violet June Hendrick Cassell; his daughters, Linda C. Turpin (Willis E. Turpin Jr.) of Dublin, Sharon Kay Schlesinger (Morris Schlesinger) of Hillsville, Mildred E. Cassell of Dublin, and Karen Gail Bowman (Eddie Ray Bowman) of Galax; his sisters, Shelby Jean Barbour of Salem, Mildred Walker of Brandywine, W.Va.; his brothers, William R. Goad of Salem and Marion V. Bowman of Campbellsville, Ky.; his brother-in-law, Fred E. Hendrick of Pulaski; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsville on Saturday, April 6, 2013, from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorial services were held at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dewey Felts and the Rev. Raleigh Haynes officiating. Burial followed in the Gladesboro Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hillsville, Va., True Vine Baptist Church in Mount Airy, N.C., or to the charity of donor's choice.
Cassell will be remembered for his kind and humble spirit and his care and concern for his family and those around him. He spent a lifetime looking after those he loved and setting an example of honor and integrity for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to follow.
