Fred Hill Wellborn, 87, of Independence, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.
He was born Dec. 30, 1926, the youngest son of Rudd and Ina Wellborn.
He was called to military service in World War II and served in the United States Army. He was deployed to Japan and Korea as part of Company I, First Infantry Regiment. He was an active member of VFW Post 7726 for more than 65 years.
He was a former member of the Town Council of Independence and the Independence Lions Club.
He was a member of Independence Jeep Club and the First Baptist Church of Independence.
Fred is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kaye A. Wellborn; three children, Doris T. Halsey and her husband, Buddy, of Independence, Va., Mark A. Thornton of Greeneville, Tenn., and Luci R. Wellborn and her husband, Will Hanna, of Charleston, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, William McTier Halsey, Hardin Lee Halsey, Derrik Alan Thornton, Jared Wellborn Hanna, Emma Renae Hanna and Mattie Ferguson Hanna; step grandson, Brandon Wayne Cox; first cousin, E.F. "Sonny" Reeves, of Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to VFW Post 7726, P.O. Box 608, Independence, Va. 24348, the First Baptist Church of Independence, P.O. Box 307, Independence, Va. 24348 or the Independence Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 607, Independence, Va. 24348.
A memorial service with military rites honoring Fred's life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at 3 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of Independence, 109 Hillcrest Avenue. Family will begin receiving friends at the church at 1 p.m. prior to the service. The Rev. Matthew Storie will officiate the service.
The family would like to thank the following for their support and kindness: Pastor Matthew Storie and the members of the First Baptist Church, members of VFW Post 7726 and auxiliary, the Independence Volunteer Rescue Squad, the staff of Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Twin County Community Hospital and Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family would like to extend a special note of thanks to Dr. John Kovacich for the friendship and care he gave Fred for more than 30 years.
