Paul Jackson "Jack" Lewis of Sylvatus, Va., passed from this life on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the age of 93.
Jack was born on April 10, 1919, in Kimball, W.Va., to George Washington and Laura Quesenberry Lewis.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth, Velma, Opal, Elsa, Mabel Rose, and Earlyne; and brothers, Mavan and Fred.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Rita Lewis; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack graduated from Sylvatus High School.
He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Meade, Md.
He received his cosmetology training at the American Academy of Beauty Culture in Washington, D.C., and took hair styling at the Robert Fiance Hair Design Institute, New York.
Jack retired in 1988 after working 37 years in his own beauty shop, Crowell Building, Pulaski, Va. He spent many happy days after his retirement doing hair for residents of Randolph House, Pulaski. He also paid many home visits to do hair or take food to shut-ins, neighbors and friends.
Jack was a member of Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church and also attended Sylvatus Christian Church.
Many of Jack's days were devoted to Sylvatus Ruritan Club. As treasurer, he assured all supplies used were always well stocked.
Jack leaves many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends to cherish his great memory; he was a great storyteller who could entertain and enlighten with histories of family and community. Genealogy searchers visited him from far and wide, and he was a driving force behind two published books about the history of Sylvatus and its people.
Funeral services were held at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel, Hillsville, Va., at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2013, with burial following at Smith-Lindsey Cemetery, Sylvatus. Ronald A. Mills and David Bays officiated. Visitation was two hours prior to services.
Consider contributions to Sylvatus Ruritan Club in Jack's memory.
