Philip Smith Porter, 95, entered into Heaven's gates on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Waddell Nursing Home.

He was born April 4, 1919, to the late Campbell Jack Porter and Bertie Gambill Porter.
In additional to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, C. J. Porter; and a sister, Nancy Porter Felts.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Pauline Dickens Porter of Galax; two sons and spouse, Ronald and Sharon Porter and Terry Joe Porter, all of Galax, Va., five grandchildren children and spouse, Chris and Karen Porter of Hillsville. Va., Keri Porter of Galax, Rachel Porter, Rhiannon and John Hunter and Zachary Porter, all of Johnson City, Tenn.; one step-grandson and spouse, Justin and Candace Iroler of Hillsville, Va.; great-grandchildren, Rachel Claire and Ryann Cate Hunter of Johnson City, Tenn., Angelica and Philip and Allison Porter of Hillsville, Va.; two step-great-grandchildren, Catrina and Carson Iroler of Hillsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Phil went to school at Coal Creek and graduated from Galax High School.
He was a member of Asbury Methodist Church and was a lay speaker.
Phil was a Captain in the Air Force and served in World War II. After the war he remained in the Air Force Reserves where he was made Major.
Phil ran the Pure Oil Station on Main Street in Galax for years. He later worked for McGrady Motors and Bill Halsey.
His hobby was making a wrecked car look like new. He was a fix-it man with a hammer, nail or wrench.
The funeral service was held Monday, April 14, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Oakland United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Gregory and the Rev. Tim Smith. Interment followed in the Oakland Cemetery. The family received friends one hour before the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oakland Cemetery Fund.
