Funeral services for Billie Jane Chitwood Halsey of Independence, Va., were held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at Independence First United Methodist Church, 171 West main Street, Independence, Va. Burial was in the Cox Cemetery, Independence, Va.. The family greeted friends from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Independence United Methodist Church. The funeral service began at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
Halsey passed away at her home in Independence on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Billie Jane Chitwood Halsey was born Feb. 8, 1935, in Franklin County Virginia to Irna Robertson and Walter Smith Chitwood.
She married LTC Guy Wilson Halsey on Aug. 5, 1958, in Blue Ridge, Virginia.
He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 2008. They were married for 49 years.
Jane was a graduate of James Madison College. A lifelong educator, she began her career teaching Home Economics in the Alexandria, Virginia Schools Systems. She later taught in and retired from the Grayson County Virginia School Systems
She was a member of Independence First United Methodist Church.
An avid historical preservationist and genealogist., she held membership in many associated community groups. Jane was a charter member of the New River Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as District Regent and State Historian of the Virginia Association Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Mary Ann Halsey of Independence, Va., William "Buddy" and Doris Halsey of Independence, Va., and Mark and Cindy Halsey of Chilhowie, Va.; a daughter, Nancy Jane Halsey Huffman of Draper, Va.; a brother, Joseph Walter Chitwood of Daleville, Va.; and four grandchildren, William McTier Halsey, Hardin Lee Halsey, Mary Jane Halsey and Grayson Edward Halsey.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary Chitwood Stephens.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the many people who cared for Jane during her long illness and to the staff at Twin County Regional Hospice.
