Herbert E. Shifley, 91, of Galion, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 peacefully at home.
Born June 8, 1922 in Galion, he was the son of the late Claudius Alvah Shifley and Edith (Guinther) Shifley. He was preceded in death on May 12, 2000 by his wife, Evelyn (Foos) Shifley whom he married on Sept. 1, 1957.
He was a 1940 graduate of Galion High School and attended the First United Church of Christ in Galion. He served during World War II
in the United States Army
Air Corps in Company C of the 1913th Aviation Engineers Battalion. Herbert was an avid sports fan, enjoyed gardening and attending family, high school and Army Air Corps Company reunions. He retired in 1984 after 32 years as supervisor of the model shop at the former PECO in Galion.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Rick Watts of North Robinson; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Greg and Ellen Shifley of Bucyrus and Drew and Andrea Shifley of Mansfield; four grandchildren, Katy (Mark)Klettlinger, Jeri (Matt) McCoy, Adric Shifley and Tegan (Matt) Lehman; six great-grandchildren, Thane and Doren Klettlinger, Elena, Ethan, Haydn and Clara McCoy; two brothers, Wilbur (Veda) Shifley of Galion and Donald (Pauline) Shifley of Galion and one sister, Marie Bilsing of Lexington.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Shifley and Richard Shifley and one sister, Luella Ernst.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23 with Rev. Brad Smith officiating. Burial will be in Iberia Cemetery.
Full military graveside honors will be conducted by the United States Army and the Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
