Robert W. Libens, 93, of Galion, died Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at his home. He was born November 9, 1919 in Crestline, Ohio to the late Charles F. and Rosella Brandt Libens. He was a 1937 graduate of Crestline High School and attended Greer Diesel Engineering School in Chicago, Illinois.
Bob worked at Strauch Hardware in Crestline. In 1943, he married Neola Elizabeth Fry of Buffalo, New York. The family lived in Willard, Ohio for 25 years where he was employed as a boilermaker for the B & O Railroad for 18 years until the shops closed in 1958. Bob was President of the Boilermaker and Blacksmith Union and served as Cub Master in the Cub Scouts.
In 1959, Pittsburgh Plate Glass opening in Crestline he joined the workforce, and for 23 years, was employed in the tooling and maintenance department. Bob moved to rural Galion in 1967 and retired in 1982. He lived his remaining years there, enjoying his family and "house in the woods". He also enjoyed vegetable gardening, fruit trees and his country life with a special interest in observing the various and unusual birds attracted to his many feeders.
He is survived by a son, Robert E. Libens of Hollywood, CA; a daughter, Colette Ann Henney of Galion; grandson, Jason R. Henney of Galion; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Neola in 2005. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Libens in 2000; and three sisters, Margaret Libens in 1925, Ruth Schwert in 1986 and Helen Sloan in 2002.
