MANSFIELD-Theone Sipes was an independent and assertive woman who never let her circumstances dictate her responses. A bit if a feminist before her time, she did not back down to the mores of a culture that expected her to be quiet and submit. Her strong will and (sometimes) brutal honesty never left you wondering her opinion.
Described as a "tough-old-cookie," Theone had an ornery streak and enjoyed her many nicknames "Baggy" "Gabby" "Sparky," each nickname a reflection of her fun-loving personality and her many and varied activities.
Her 96 years of constant activity came to a quiet and peaceful end, as Theone passed away Saturday morning March 30, 2013 in her Mansfield home.
Born Anna Theone Grogg in Congress Township of Morrow County, Ohio, she was the eighth of twelve children born to William Henry and Laura (Kreigh) Grogg.
Theone had lived in Galion where she was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church and clerked in the former Moore's Hardware Store. After moving to Mansfield, she was active with the Lexington Senior-Civic Center and loved to find a card game. She could be almost vicious when it came to a hand of euchre – she liked to win – but only cheated when she was playing with her grandchildren.
She never let her age get the best of her and remained active in the kitchen. Her home made noodles and popcorn balls will simply never be replicated. She made a dessert with cherries and Cool-Whip that was nicknamed "Crack-in-a-Pan" … so good, that after one bite, you just could not stop eating it.
The family that will miss her humor, her cooking and her fiery personality include her children Mary (Delmar) Miller of Ft. Myers, FL, Jacqueline (Robert) Carter of Mansfield and Duane (Beverly) Treisch of Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren Jeff (Laura) Carter of Lexington, Greg (Jennifer) Carter of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Ann Carter of Lexington, Amy (Tom) Hess of Columbus, Bob (Jennifer) Carter of Cleveland Heights, Bradley Treisch of Florida, Shelley (Leslie Black) Miller of North Carolina, Tammey (Dean) Kelly of Kansas, Kristey (Ricky) Badart of Kansas, Vickie (Craig) Deblasi of California, Todd (Julie) Miller of California and Scott (Amy) Miller of Arizona; 26 great grandchildren; and eleven great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Jefferson Treisch in 1975 and Russell Sipes in 1989. Also deceased are two great grandchildren and her eleven siblings.
