Cal Songer had the determination it took to win and the patience to wait for the breaks. That was his attitude in golfing and also toward life. His determination was evident through a life of integrity and success and his patience was a blessing, as he passed away peacefully Thursday, January 30, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at Galion Community Hospital after failing health. He was 85.
Born Calvin J. Songer, December 31, 1928 in Sharpsville, Penn. to Albert and Naomi (McCoy) Songer, he married Margaret A. "Peg" (Hamburg) Songer on April 25, 1953 and she survives.
Cal proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attended Youngstown College. He moved to Galion in 1962 and retired in 1989 from Western Electric after 35 years with most of those years inspecting products made at North Electric in Galion. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Galion where he served on the Education Council and was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council 1234. He has been a member of Valley View Golf Course since it opened. He was a regular in the Saturday morning skins game and shot his age at least once every year for 15 straight years - from age 69 until a stroke ended his golf career in 2013. "CJ" also was a member of Galion Elks Lodge 1191 and American Legion Scarbrough Post 243 in Galion and delivered Meals-on-wheels for the Crawford County Council on Aging. He enjoyed golf, card games, dancing and spending time with family (visiting many while wintering in Florida). He was an avid sports fan, especially of The Ohio State University Buckeyes and The Cleveland Indians.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Peg, he is survived by five children, Mark (Lois) Songer of Key West, Fla., Tim (Martha Kniseley) Songer of Charlotte, N.C., Linda (Jack) Kidwell of Galion, Bridget (Jeff) Sutton of Galion and Mike (Abby) Songer of Marion and nine grandchildren, Mia Carrasco-Songer, Gina Carrasco-Songer, Dylan Carrasco-Songer, Kerry Sutton, Kasey Sutton, Kaitlyn Sutton, Scott Kidwell, Joseph Songer and Anna Songer. He is survived by all his brothers and sisters, Alice Maloney of Dunedin, Fla., Albert Songer of Muncie, Ind., John (Irene) Songer of West Middlesex, Penn., Rosemary (Joe) Piccirilli of Hermitage, Penn. and Thomas (Mary Kay) Songer of Erie, Penn.
