William C. "Bill" Gatton, 82, of Galion, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 at Galion Community Hospital in Galion, following a period of failing health.
Born Aug. 23, 1930 in Delaware, he was the son of the late William E. and Ada May (Fleming) Gatton. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, M. Gretchen (Klee) Gatton, whom he married on July 12, 1951.
Bill graduated from Frank B. Willis High School in Delaware, class of 1948, attended The Ohio State University and graduated from the Army School of Engineering in Fort Belvoir, Va. He served with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Bill opened Lowe Brothers Paint Store in 1955 on the uptown square of Galion. He then worked for D.H. Bowman and Sons, Incorporated in Bellville; Gallo and Sons, Incorporated in Wooster and Grubb and Pipes in Iberia as a road construction estimator and supervisor.
He enjoyed community volunteering with Special Olympics, the former Pickle Run Festival and assisting the Galion Health Department with their annual flu shot clinics. He was a member of Galion Lodge 414 Free and Accepted Masons; 32nd Degree Member of the Ancient and Accepted Rite Valley of Columbus; Aladdin Temple Shrine in Columbus and its Legion of Honor; Galion Moose Lodge 303, American Legion Post 115 in Delaware and the Galion Community Center-YMCA.
At Bill's request, no calling hours will be held. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 at Oak Grove Cemetery, 334 S. Sandusky St., Delaware, Ohio with Rev. Dreama Caudill officiating. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion.
