Betty Church, age 81, of Bellville, passed away Saturday evening, November 30, 2013, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was born in Haysi, Virginia on October 2, 1932, the daughter of the late Joseph Tomecko and Lydia Ann (Viers) Church. On May 3, 1948, Betty married her childhood friend and love of her life, George W. Church Jr. in Pikeville, KY. Together they shared over 65 wonderful years of marriage.
She worked in the cable department of ITT in Galion for 20 years. In her younger years, Betty was a member of Blooming Grove Freewill Baptist Church. She then helped start the Mt. Tabor Freewill Baptist Church in her living room and helped host until they were able to have their own building. She had served as treasurer of the church until earlier this year when her health began to fail her. Betty lived a very active life. She loved to be outdoors working in her vegetable and flower gardens. Every year she would can the vegetables and make jelly and apple butter to share with everyone. She and George would also spend a lot of time going out to hunt for ginseng. There was nothing in the kitchen Betty could not make from scratch. She was famous for her southern "hillbilly" dishes ranging from chicken and dumplings, huge breakfasts with her sausage gravy, and any dessert you could imagine. She made a special dish for each member of the family on their birthdays. More than anything, she loved her family and friends. She would do anything she possibly could to take care of them, being the compassionate peacemaker of the family.
Betty was the glue that held the family together and she will be dearly missed by her husband, George, of Bellville; four children: Mary (Bill) Kincade of Nevada, OH, Gregory (Barbara) Church of Bellville, Jed "Steven" (Barbara) Church of Galion, Anthony "Tony" (Melody) Church of Mount Gilead; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a step brother, Larry Tomecko of Koots, IN.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Mullins; her brother, Elbert Tomecko; one grandchild; her step-father, Kilby Church; step-mother, Laverne Tomecko; and a step-brother Joe Tomecko.
The Church family will greet friends from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her life will be held there at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2013 with Pastor Richard Lane and Pastor Jim Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow in Iberia Cemetery. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Hospice of Morrow County, 228 South St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338, in thanks of their wonderful care of Betty and her family.
