Dana Ronald Sanders, Sr. (aka, Snake) of rural Galion died November 16th, 2013 following a life filled with laughter and love. Dana passed peacefully in the comfort of his home with his wife of 43 years by his side.
Dana was born on June 23, 1950, the son of H. Allen and Alleen (Prather) Sanders, Jr. On July 22, 1974 he married Cathy M. Vanderkooi.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Dana served in Vietnam where he was a swim instructor and boxer. His proudest achievement was building a beautiful family and surrounding himself with great friends. He was a dedicated railroader, working 38 years for Conrail and CSX as a heavy machine operator, track inspector, & foreman. Many nights were spent around the dinner table listening to stories about his work and colleagues, sharing life's lessons. Although he spent many weeks on the road away from home, he never missed a ball game.
Outside of work, Dana helped his father run a family business and maintain the Ye Olde Clocke & Jewelry Shoppe in Galion, Ohio. He was well known in the community as a local tradesman, as well as an avid lover of big toys like backhoes, dump trucks, and anything that lifted rocks. His contributions to coaching and mentoring local kids will always be remembered, as he had an endless love for sports. Many of DJ and Allen's friends thought of Dana as a 2nd dad.
Dana's spirit was full of youthful curiosity. He was a collector of toys, games, and all that was fun. Rare was a moment when Dana was found without jokes and laughter. He lived life to the fullest, and spread joy to everyone he met. If there is one thing to learn from his passing, it's that every moment of life is valuable. Through the end, he never complained and always remained grateful for the time he had on this earth. In his final days, he felt as if he was already walking with angels. Dana's wishes are that we remember him in celebration and that our lives be filled with a loving spirit. Whether it's in an "O-H, I-O" or "Hoody Hoo", we'll remember him always. We love you Dana.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy (Vanderkooi),his children: Dana Ronald Sanders, Jr. and Henry Allen (Athena) Sanders, III, his grandson, William Henry Sanders -Papa's Yummer, his three sisters: Constance (Steve) Gist, Sandra (Roy) Bernard, and Virginia (Richard) Beightler, numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifetime friends also survive.
The Sanders' would like to thank our friends and family for their support in this difficult time. We are forever grateful.
