Harlan Ray Swim, 89, of 3580 St. Rt. 309, Iberia, passed away Monday, September 16, 2013 at Mill Creek Nursing And Rehab, Galion, after a short illness.
Ray was born in Farmers, KY on August 8, 1924 to the late Allie Swim and Josephine (Alfrey) Thomas. He married Barbara A. Staats on June 14, 1948 and she preceded him in death on April 22, 2005.
Ray lived in Iberia most of his life. He was a veteran of the United States Army. During World War II, Ray served his country in Italy, where he became a P.O.W. twice. Ray is known to be the last survivor of the 88th Division Blue Devils. He was employed by ITT from which he retired.
Ray loved music, especially playing the mandolin while sitting on his porch, drinking his Pepsi. In fact, Ray played last week at Mill Creek on the porch with his friends. Ray also enjoyed trains.
He is survived by two sons and one daughter; Alan Swim, Galion, Ryan and Sue Swim, Galion, Sherri Price, Iberia, seven grandchildren, Lynn Jones, Orrville, Todd Swim, Galion, Angie Livermore, Springfield, Danielle Christy, Marion, April Ivy, Galion, Brenda Barstow, Lancaster, and Eddie Price, Florida, twenty-four great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren on the way; and his brother Billy Williams Salt Lick, KY.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles E. Thomas, his daughter-in-law, Maxine Swim, and a stillborn great-granddaughter, Kate Lynn Jean Burns-Price.
Friends may call Thursday September 19, 2013 from 5-8 pm at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion, with Pastor Jim Lillo officiating. Burial will follow in Iberia Cemetery, Iberia. Full military honors will be given at the graveside the U.S. Army and the Crestline/Galion veterans organizations.
