Kathryn Mae Groth, aged 86 years and 11 months, of Galion, died in the wee hours of Sunday, February 2, 2014 at the home of her son after a brief illness.

Born in Detroit, MI on March 2, 1927, she was the daughter of Harold A. and Grace L. (Timmerman) Root Wood and step daughter to Louis S. Wood, all of whom preceded her in death. On July 12, 1947 she married Elmer E. "Whitey" Groth in Burlingame, CA. He preceded her in death on July 10, 2001.
Kay and Whitey moved to Galion in 1954. Kay was active in many of Galion's volunteer and social clubs. She was a board member and president of both the Family Service Board and the Galion Community Hospital Women's Auxiliary Board. She was a member of several Auxiliary Twigs, holding offices in those groups over the years. Most recently she was a member of Twig #4.
Kay also served on the board of the Galion Trouble Clinic and as secretary of that body from 1964 until 1976. Kay also enjoyed visiting as a representative of the Welcome Wagon, and served a term as President in the 1950's. She served as Treasurer for the Central District of the Ohio Hospital Assoc. and worked in the Auxiliary's Nearly New Shop. She was a member of the National Registry of Medical Secretaries, Neighborhood Garden Club, Sorosis, Galion Community Theatre and the Galion Historical Society. Kay was a past president of the Republican Women's Club and was a presiding judge during several elections. In her retirement years she was an avid reader, was a frequent borrower at the Galion Public Library and enjoyed working in her flower garden in her backyard.
Surviving are: her two sons and daughters-in-law, George T. "Tim" and Patricia Rice Groth, of Galion, and Edward E. and Marlene Groth of Ferrum, Virginia, her five grandchildren, Ryan and Beth Groth of Greenville, SC, Daniel Groth of Roanoke, Virginia, Kevin Groth of Charlottesville, VA, Anna Catherine Cole of Bluffton, SC, and Howard Michael Cole of Galion, her two great-grandsons, Lucas Groth and Benjamin Groth, both of South Carolina, her four sisters, Lou Ann and Charles Wood of Cincinnati, Carolyn House of Grosse Pointe, MI, Nancy Murphy of Rochester Hills, MI, and Elizabeth Wood of St. Clair Shores, MI. She also leaves behind her long time good friends Mrs. Vera Imhoff, Mrs. Anne Evans and Mrs. Stephanie Supron.
She was preceded in death by her sister Margaret Driscoll of Detroit, MI.
Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion. A service to celebrate her life with Christ will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 7, 2014 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Galion, with Pastor Ash Welch officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galion.
Memorial contributions may be made to Galion Hospital Women's Auxiliary, the Galion Community Theatre Endowment Fund or Homecare Matters Home Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
