Walter D. "Wimpy" Smith, 88, formerly of 101 Lutz Court, Galion, died Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Morrow County Hospital, Mt. Gilead.
Walter was born in Climax on January 7, 1925 to the late Frank J. Smith and Mary A. (Feighley) Douglas. He married Lena Mae Fleming on November 17, 1968 and she preceded him on December 17, 2003.
He retired from Cleland Manufacturing after thirty-seven years as a Welder. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a Sergeant where he received a Bronze Star. He was a member of Galion VFW Post #4329, Galion Amvets Post #1979, Galion Army-Navy Garrison #987, Galion American Legion Post #243, Galion Moose Family Center #303, and Galion Owls Aerie #4008. Walter enjoyed gardening and growing tomatoes year around.
He is survived by his daughter Joyce Smith, SC; his two sons: Jerry & Gloria Smith, Galion and Bill & Brenda Smith, Galion; his step-daughter Linda & Gerald Weikle, Fredericktown; his step-son Samuel & Lynda Morrison, Edison; his six grandchildren: Michelle & Jason McLeskey, Nathan & Courtney Harper, Zack & Allison Harper all of SC; Heidi & Jason Sargent, Bradford; Amanda & Joe Walker, CO; and Billy & Sara Smith, Galion; his six step-grandchildren: Megan & Kyle Nulk, Galion; Sara Beran, Crestline; Tara & Jason DeMers, Fredericktown; Jason Weikle, Mt. Gilead; Sam G. & Natasha Morrison, Galion; and Aubry Cole, San Antonio, TX; his twenty great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his three sisters and two brothers: Violet Robach, Elmer Smith, Howard A. Smith, Eileen Wagner and Edna Shortz.
Friends may call Sunday, February 24, 2013 from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion, with Pastor Danny Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galion. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force and the Galion/Crestline Veterans Organizations.
