Daniel Sparks, 79, of Galion, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at Mill Creek Nursing Center in Galion.
Born April 21, 1934 in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Porter) Sparks. He married Katherine J. "Kathy" (Coburn) Sparks on Jan. 20, 1956 who survives.
Dan was a member of Community Christian Church, where he was a Deacon and Trustee. He was a member of the Galion Elks Lodge 1191 and the American Legion in Earlington, Ky. and was always smiling and friendly to everyone. He never met a stranger. Dan served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.
He retired from G.C.S. Air Service in Galion after 23 years where he drove truck.
Surviving are his two daughters and sons-in-law, Dayna and Bill Beavers of Earlington, Ky. and Mary L. and Ken Burkhart of Galion; one son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Susan Sparks of Galion; eight grandchildren, Jeremy (Robyn) Burkhart, Chris (Sarah) Burkhart, Zac (Melissa) Beavers, Katey Beavers and Daniel, Matthew, Andy and Grace Sparks; three great-grandchildren, Caydence, Jaycee and Sophia; one sister, Mona Holcomb of Ironton and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Sparks of Wheelersburg.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Edward, William, Charles, Troy and Jack; one sister, Marjorie McCarty and his step-mother, Virtie (Davis) Sparks who raised him.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013 at Community Christian Church with Dr. Daniel A. Turner officiating.
Military funeral honors will be held at Community Christian Church by the United States Army and the Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail. Interment will be in Crawford County Memory Gardens.
