Smith, Curtis* - Gastonia  
GASTONIA - Curtis W. "Curt" Smith, 91, passed away peacefully March 3, 2015, surrounded by his devoted family and went to meet his sweet loving wife. He was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Stanly County to the late Sandy and Lula B. Allen Smith. Curtis honorably served during WW II in the US Navy Pacific Fleet as a torpedoman aboard the USS Lovelace. He retired as Materials Production Manager with A. B. Carter Company after serving as Produc-tion Supervisor for Impact Plastics and Plant Manager for Northwest Plastics, all in Gastonia. Curtis was a long-standing member of West Cramerton Baptist Church. He had a great love for that church and served in many leadership roles devoting his time, many talents and resources. His prayers came from his heart and were always noted to be so beautiful. Survivors include his children, Kay S. Nichols (Larry), Rick C. Smith (Linda) and Ron L. Smith (Sharon); brothers, Melvin Smith, Glenn Smith (Francis), Walter L. Smith (Pat); six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Inez Falls Smith; two sisters, Geneva Smith and Edna Faye Smith Tucker Shaw. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at West Cramerton Baptist Church with the Rev. David MacEachern officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Attn: Development, N. Randolph St., Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203, or if you prefer, flowers will be accepted. Spivey, Francis* - Las Vegas  
LAS VEGAS - Francis "Frank" LaMantia Spivey, 43, passed away Feb. 25, 2015. He was born Dec. 4, 1971, in Cleveland County, to Joyce LaMantia Spivey and the late Kenneth Spivey. Frank proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant after 23 years of service. Frank is survived by his father and mother, Dennis and Joyce Helms of Stanley; wife, Suzanne Spivey of Abilene, Texas; children, Jennifer Spivey, Christopher Spivey, Michael Dillio-Spivey and Ashley Matas all of Abilene, Texas; granddaughter, Alivia Dorsey of Abilene, Texas; sisters, Emily Helms and Jennifer Spivey Neal, brother-in-law, Charles Neal; niece, Gianna Neal. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. at New Life Baptist Church on Saturday, March 7, 2015. The Rev. Bo Osborne will preside. Burial will be at Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Grady Woods Jr., 71, died Mar. 3, 2015, at his home. LOWELL - Roberta Jean Kachel Brittain, 77, passed away March 2, 2015, at Caromont Regional Medical Cen-ter. She was born Nov. 25, 1937, in Colorado Springs, daughter of the late Gale and Ruby Kachel. Left to cherish her memories are son, Kirk Brittain; daughters, Elizabeth Ferrell and Renee Hester and husband, Jim; brother, Ronnie Kachel and wife, Dorothy; grandchildren, Nikki Ferrell and Kevin Brittain and wife, Elisa. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bo Brittain and brothers, Dick and Rob-ert Kachel Gathering of friends and family will be 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at 309 McAdenville Road, Lowell, NC 28098. KINGS MOUNTAIN - James "Jim" S. Champion, 93, died March 2, 2015, at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was born in Cleveland County to the late Leroy Champion and Bessie Hamrick Champion. Cloninger, Edward* - Gastonia  
GASTONIA - Edward Daniel Cloninger Sr., 59, passed away March 2, 2015, at Robin Johnson House in Dallas. He was born Oct. 23, 1955, native of Gaston County, son of the late Eugene and Doris Cloninger. Left to cherish his memories are son, Edward Cloninger, Jr.; brother, Douglas Cloninger; sister, Becky Whit-worth and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Maude Bryson and sister, Billie Jo Carpenter. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel, 1503 S. York Road, Gas-tonia, officiated by the Rev. Danny Gardner. Deaton, Leota* - Stoneville  
STONEVILLE, Ga. - Leota Falls Deaton, 85, died peacefully on Feb. 26, 2015, with family members by her side. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday at Colonial Funeral Home with the Rev. Virginia Wood, of the Madison Presbyterian Church officiating. Calling hours or reception hours shall be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on March 6 prior to the memorial service. Leota was one of five children entrusted to William Ira Falls and Nannie Ponder Falls. She was reared in Gas-tonia, North Carolina and preceded in death by her mother, father and two brothers, Jim Falls and Bill Falls. Surviving sisters are Carmen Falls Redding of Greensboro and Nancy Falls Bridgeman of Gastonia. Also, re-maining at the home is husband George J. Deaton Jr. Surviving sons and wives are Henry Campbell Thornton and Jane Wadsworth Thornton and G. Julius Deaton III and Kimberly Clayton Deaton. Surviving grandchildren are: Elizabeth Thornton Poore, Charles Thornton, Hannah Blythe Deaton and Kathe-rine Hunter Falls Deaton, and great-granddaughter Kealea Poore. Leota was a member of many religious and civic organizations, among them: the Madison Presbyterian Church, the Stoneville Presbyterian Church, the Stoneville Garden Club, the James Hunter National Society - Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Society - Daughters of 1812 and the Rockingham County Retired Teachers Association. Throughout the years, Leota gave freely of her time and talents to many and en-joyed those friendships. Leota was a native North Carolinian and enjoyed her youth in Gastonia, North Carolina. After graduation from high school in Gastonia, Leota acquired a BA in English from Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina. Leota later attended Appalachian State Teachers College and earned her Master's Degree in Library Science from Ap-palachian State Teachers College. Leota taught schools within the North Carolina Public Education System for over 35 years, teaching in Ruffin, Wentworth, Madison-Mayodan and Stoneville. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Morehead Memorial Hospital for their kindness and delivery of quality healthcare during her time of need. Also, the family would like to thank Hospice of Rock-ingham County for their gentle kindness and loving care during her illness. The family would like to thank friends for well wishes and kindnesses. In lieu of flowers, the Deaton family asks that you give a donation to Hospice of Rockingham County, North Carolina in Leota's memory. Colonial Funeral Home in Madison is serving the family. Hedrick, Rachel* - Shelby  
SHELBY - Rachel H. Hedrick, 95, beloved mother, the widow of Karl Holmes Hedrick Sr., went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 27, 2015. She was a resident of Peak Resources in Shelby. A native of Boiling Springs, Rachel was born Sept. 4, 1919, the youngest daughter of Prof. J.D. Huggins and Bes-sie A. Huggins. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Boiling Springs Baptist Church. The family will visit with friends and family after the service in the fellowship hall at the church to celebrate Rachel's life. GASTONIA - Lessie Branton Henderson, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on March 2, 2015, at her residence. She was born in Gaston County on Feb. 25, 1930, to the late James Luther and Ollie Mae Laws Branton. Lessie was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Cramerton. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend and was loved by all who knew her! In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert Henderson and son, Bryan Henderson, twin sister, Bessie Biggerstaff, sister, Violet Palmer, and brother, Robert Eugene Branton. Survivors include her loving daughter, Debbie Henderson Heafner and husband Charles of Asheboro; grand-sons, Charles Heafner and wife Crystal of Stanley, NC and Nathan Heafner and wife Julie of Liberty, NC; great-grandson, Dylan Heafner; sister, Nellie Murphy and husband Reverend Dewey Murphy of Charlotte The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev.
