Hartsell, Betty* - Lancaster  
LANCASTER, S.C. - Betty Wilson Hartsell, 87, passed away May 24, 2015, at the home of her son Joe and his wife Phyllis. She was born in Gastonia, daughter of the late Columbus E. Wilson and the late Annie Laura Wilson and was the wife of the late Conrad F. Hartsell. Mrs. Hartsell's favorite pastime was engaging in lively conversations with her family and friends. She was known for her sharp wit and "Roosevelt Democrat" political views. She was quite the dog lover and often called her sons by her favorite collie's name. Mrs. Hartsell is survived by her sons, Joseph W. Hartsell and his wife Phyllis, Conrad Earl Hartsell, Carl Richard Hartsell and his wife Louise and a son-in-law John Watson. She was also survived by three sis-ters, Frances Towery and her husband Jim, Jane Price and Helen Withers, and a brother-in-law Bob Tate. She has six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many cherished nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hartsell was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad F. Hartsell, and a daughter, Loretta Wat-son. The Celebration of Life Graveside Service for Mrs. Hartsell will be 11:00 am Friday, May 29, 2015 at Chester Memorial Gardens by Rev. David Sealy. The family suggest, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Lancaster, 901 Meeting Street, Suite 201, Lancaster, SC 29720. Hawkins, Karen* - Gastonia  
GASTONIA - Karen Elizabeth Hawkins, 64, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 27, 2015. She was born Dec. 21, 1950, in Mecklenburg County to the late Edward and Katie Fisher. Karen worked for 20 years at H&R Block. Karen is survived by her husband of 41 years, Oren Hawkins of Gastonia; children, Ronnie Hawkins and wife, Shealene Boolman of Buda, Texas, Larry Hawkins and wife, Vanessa of Little Rock, Ark., John Hawkins of Gastonia, Angela Hoffman and husband, Richard of Gastonia, Elizabeth Hawkins of Gas-tonia; 11 grandchildren; three brothers, Jim Fisher and wife, Rachel of Stanley, John Fisher and wife, Lisa of Mt. Holly, Frank Fisher and wife, Carolyn of Shelbyville, Tenn. A celebration of her life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley. Interment will be at Hillcrest Gardens, Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. SHELBY – Marjorie Ann Smith Hayes, 82, died Sunday, May 24 2015, at Hospice Wendover. She was born March 7, 1933, daughter of Will and Bessie Smith. A celebration of life service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 7 p.m. Visitation will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the church in the sanctuary before the service. Hedrick, Ferrie* - Belmont  
BELMONT - Ferrie Rhyne Hedrick, 96, passed away May 22, 2015. She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late Thomas G. and Ella Lineberger Rhyne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Hedrick; siblings, Claude L. Rhyne, Wayne A. Rhyne, Earl A. Rhyne, Ben L. Rhyne, Edith Rhyne and Frances Tucker; and a niece, Ra-chel Rhyne. She was a talented artist, an avid gardener and loved her church. She adored her family and loved nothing more than to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She loved all animals and res-cued and loved many during her lifetime. There was no project too large or too small for her to accom-plish. She was a hairdresser for over 50 years and formed many lasting relationships with her clients. Her kindness and compassion toward others was immeasurable and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Hedrick is survived by her children, Brandt R. Hedrick of Belmont, Celia H. Beam and husband Mike of Denver, Joan H. Widenhouse and husband Kurt of Belmont, and Rhonda H. Moss and husband Randy of Lake Wylie, S.C.; five grandchildren, Matthew T. Johnson, Ashley S. Jones, Allison S. Chinchilla, Taylor S. Moss and Evan R. Moss; two great-grandchildren, Kendall Jones and Nolan Jones; a nephew, Tom W. Robinson of Greensboro, Ga., 2 nieces, Margaret R. Bigham of Matthews and Patti R. Tolbert of Mount Holly; many great nieces and nephews; and many great-great nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Hedrick will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Holy Comforter Luther-an Church. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Holy Comforter Lutheran Church, 216 North Main Street, Belmont, NC 28012. Hicks, Winifred 'Winnie'* - Gastonia  
GASTONIA – Winifred "Winnie" Upton Hicks, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2015. Born in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Boyd "Bud" Webster Upton and Mary Gold Upton, and the wife of the late Ulysses Coleman "U.C." Hicks Jr. Mrs. Hicks was a member of Love Memorial Baptist Church and retired from Southern Screen Products. Mrs. Hicks is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Betty Hicks, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends of Mrs. Hicks are invited to attend her visitation beginning at 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Angeline Delores Ramseur Hopper, 67, of 557 Marys Grove Church Road died May 21, 2015 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was born March 14, 1948 in Cleveland County to Shirley Curtis Ramseur and the late William Ram-seur. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Westside Community Church in Gastonia. Burial will fol-low at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain. DALLAS - Anthony Lance "Tony" Huffman, 46, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015. He was a native of Gaston County and the son of Steve and Carolyn Wilson Huffman. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Charles Boyd Church. Tony was employed with Howco Inc. The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia with the Rev. Jerry Millwood officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park. Hunsucker, Robert* - Hickory  
HICKORY - Robert Ray Hunsucker, 88, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at CaroMont Health in Gastonia. Born October 30, 1926 in Amelia County, VA, he was the son of the late Junius Ray and Mary Young Hunsucker. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, American Legion Post 48 of Hickory and a Charter member of the North Carolina Sheriffs Association. Robert served in the US Army in the 7th Division during WWII. He was deployed to Korea at the end of world war as occupation troops were one of the first US troops to ever set foot in the country of Korea. Robert was awarded the Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal, Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp; Combat Infantryman Badge, 1st awarded Honorable Service lapel button, WWII Sharpshooter badge with rifle bar. He was also a member of the Merchant Marines from 1948-1952 and a 1948 graduate of the US Maritime Service Training School in St Petersburg, FL. Sailing to numerous places around the globe, in 1949 he went to Iran, aboard the "USAT Walton W. Schwenb" with a ship load of guns and ammunition and in 1952, he was aboard the ship "War Hawk" to Korea with another ship load of guns and ammunition, for the Korean War. Robert worked for Service Distributing Company in Hickory for 15 years and retired from Hunsucker Frame Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Mozelle Hollar Hunsucker, son, David Ray Hunsucker and two brothers, Hassell Monroe and James Herman Hunsucker. He is survived by two nephews, Dennis Hunsucker of Conover and Larry Hunsucker of Gastonia; sis-ter-in-law, Thelma Hunsucker of Conover; a number of great nephews and great great-nieces and neph-ews. The funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover with Pastor Mark Schudde officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Conover City Cemetery with military graveside honors by the American Legion Post 48 of Hickory.
