Baxter Smith

GASTONIA - Baxter Warren "Puck" Smith, 86, passed away on Jan. 19, 2013, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Mecklenburg County on Sept. 20, 1926, to the late William and Alice Hagler Smith.

Mr. Smith was an Army veteran and worked for Belmont Heritage Corp. for over 35 years. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and a good laugh with family and friends. He was Dad, Grandpa or Uncle to everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia Hill Smith of the home; children, Ernest Smith and wife Wanda of Stanley, Alice Stamey and husband Rick of Kannapolis, Larry Thomas Smith and wife Amelia of Maiden, Linda Helms and husband Joe of Gastonia; sisters Margaret Crisp of Gastonia and Dot Kirby of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Boyd Smith, brothers, William and H.T. Smith and a sister, Mabel Hartness.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at McLean Funeral Directors, Belmont.

A service celebrating his life will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Bumgardner Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Johns officiating.

Burial will be at Evergreen –"A Quiet Place."
