GASTONIA - Bobbie Hardin Kessell, 85, of Covenant Village, died Feb. 28, 2013, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Mangum, Okla., the youngest of eleven children to the late William Henry Hardin and Zileby Purcell Hardin.
Mrs. Kessell worked as a waitress and hostess for 45 years, starting at age 15. In Gastonia she had worked at the Elks Club
, Honey's Restaurant and the Gaston Country Club. She met her husband to be, Alfred "Freddie" Charles Kessell, while she was living in New Mexico and he was serv-ing in the US Army there. They were married May 18, 1944, and moved to Gastonia in 1945, where Mr. Kessell went to work as a manager at Firestone Mill. His father had come to Gastonia earlier to help transition the mill to Firestone standards and became Superintendent.
Mrs. Kessell was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served in Circle 6. She enjoyed sewing, feeding the birds, working word puzzles, bowling, playing cards, and going to her grandchildren's ballgames. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors of Mrs. Kessell include her three sons and their wives, Frederick and Susan Kessell of Lake Wylie, SC; David and Glenda Kessell; Robert and Gina Kessell, all of Gastonia; grandchildren, Andrew Kessell and wife Laura of Southern Pines, NC; Alexandra Kessell of Gastonia; Adam Kessell of Charlotte; and Erin Kessell of Gastonia; great-grandchildren, Samuel David Kessell and Carson Michael Kessell; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Alfred Charles Kessell, and by her ten brothers and sisters.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Kessell's life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church with Dr. John L. Frye Jr. and the Rev. Lauren Vanacore officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service in the church parlor.
A private service of committal will be held for the family at Gaston Memorial Park.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Covenant Village Garden Wing, Dr. Ronald Digby and Dr. George Bell for their compassion and gracious care given Mrs. Kessell.
