GASTONIA -- Charles William Thornburg, 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, after years of declining health at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late William Dean and Edith Lineberger Thornburg. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Thornburg; brother, Jack Oates; sister, Helen Cloninger and step mother, Edna Thornburg.
Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Army
retiring after 20 years of service. He worked and later retired from Sherman Textiles, Dallas. He was a member of Gastonia Foursquare Church. His hobbies included golf and selling his "finds" at the flea market.
Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Bobbie Bradley Thornburg; grandchildren, Leah Thornburg, David Thornburg; great grandson, Zachary Jones; brothers, Phillip Thornburg, Bill Oates; sisters, Rebecca Clippard, Carolyn Haas and husband Jimmy and Geraldine Hoover.
A visitation will be held 1:30 until 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia with a funeral service to follow at 3 p.m. in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors with Rev. Andy Ballentine, Rev. Virgil Lemmings and Rev. L.J. Barnes officiating. Interment will follow with Military Honors in Gaston Memorial Park.
