GASTONIA - Doris Evelyn Shellman Young, 84, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Gaston County, a daughter of the late Henry Spry and Bessie Galloway Shellman.
Doris was educated in Gaston County Schools, graduated from Belmont Abbey College, received her master's in education from Appalachian State University. She was a teacher in Gaston County Schools, retiring with more than 30 years of service. She was a church organist for Cramer Memorial United Methodist Church and many other area churches over the years. Doris loved to travel and to collect African Art, and she wrote a book on the subject. She was a loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors of Mrs. Young include her loving husband of 62 years, Rodney E. Young of Gastonia; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Lynda Young of Boone; daughter, Lisa Ann Young of Gastonia; grandchildren, Jeff Untz and wife, Carolyn, of Asheville; Loren Annas and husband, Gene, of Hickory; great-grandchildren, Drew Annas and Alex Annas; sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Hugh Johnston of Gastonia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Milton and Shelba Shellman of Gastonia; David and Amanda Shellman of Clemmons; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma "Pete" Shellman.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.
A service to celebrate Doris' life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors with the Rev. John Stanley officiating. Interment will follow the service at Gaston Memorial Park.
