GASTONIA - Elene Lytle Dodgen, 95, loving wife of the late Thomas A. Dodgen and beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully and surrounded by her family on Nov. 22, 2013, at Courtland Terrace.
A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late William Paris Lytle and Fearl Lytle Jenkins.
She also was preceded in death by her brothers Thidas and Burgin Lytle and her sister Martha Plampin.
Following her retirement from Firestone Textiles after 36 years of service, Elene fulfilled her dream as a preschool teacher at First Wesleyan Church Day School. She was devoted to family and church serving as a Girls Scout Leader and long time Sunday school teacher for all age groups. She was a leader in the building of the original Firestone Wesleyan Methodist Church. The first to receive calls for prayer requests, Elene was always ready to serve, listen and open her heart to those in need. She was a long time member of Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church and was faithful in praying and reading her Bible. Her greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughters and the great-grandchildren.
She is survived by sons Tom and wife Linda and Bill and wife Loretta; her granddaughters Kelly Wood and husband Dan, Tracy Owens and husband Danny, and Lauren Wells and husband Jake; great-grandchildren Courtney Wood Knapp and husband Dustin, Andrew Owens, Grant Wood, and Parker and Lillie Wells; numerous nephews and nieces; and the very special caregivers of Courtland Terrace.
A celebration of her life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Reverend Debra Short officiat-ing. The family will receive friends following the service. A private family committal service will be held at Gaston Memorial Park at 2:30.
