Elizabeth Velazquez

Elizabeth Ann Saunders Velazquez, 76, was born Jan. 24, 1937, in Gastonia, to the late James Luico and Elsie Erwin Saunders and transitioned peacefully on Feb. 6, 2013, at Gaston Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

She was also preceded in death by her beloved son Marcos Alexander "Ringo" Velazquez and siblings: Charles L. Saun-ders, Claude E. Saunders and Gwendolyn S. Moten.

Elizabeth, affectionately called "Ann," was a graduate of Highland High School Class of 1954. She received her under-graduate and graduate degrees from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte respectively. Ann was an educator for over forty years, having taught in several North Carolina counties, before retiring from Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. At an early age, she joined Epworth United Methodist Church in Gastonia, and remained a faithful member. Ann was a
lover of sports but her niche was watching "Tiger" Woods play golf.

To cherish her memories, she leaves brothers: James E. Saunders (Julia) of Charlotte; Carroll B. Saunders and Alfred "Pete" Saunders of Gastonia; sisters: Doris S. Holland and Brenda S. Brown (Conard) of Gastonia; grandchildren: Juan Velazquez and DeAnna Velazquez of Charlotte, and; great-granddaughter: Aubriana F. Velazquez of Charlotte; and Ker-tisha Dunbar (fiancé of Juan Velazquez); uncle: Howard Erwin of Silver Spring, MD; cousins: Fredrick Saunders (Edna); LaBar Erwin; Erwin B. Costner (Edith); and Linda Erwin; sister-in-law: Garnell Saunders; a special childhood friend Ree Mattie White; caregiver/nephew Shawn Saunders; neighbor Teresa Davis and former daughter-in-law, Stephanie V. Walker (Eddie); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in remembrance of Ann Velazquez can be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1325 Linwood Road, Gastonia, NC 28052.

The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 917 Clanton Road, Charlotte, and 11 a.m. to noon Monday in the parlor of Epworth United Methodist Church. The funeral is at noon and interment will be in North Oakland Street Cemetery.

Costner Funeral Home is entrusted.
