GASTONIA -- Gary Douglas Postell, 78, passed away April 26, 2013, at Caromont Regional Medical Center.
He was born on July 6, 1934 in Cherokee County, to the late William Hayden and Hattie Belle Nelson Postell.
He was a United States Marine Veteran from 1953 to 1957 serving in Korea, a member of First Baptist Church, Gastonia, a member of the American Legion Post 23 and Gaston County Honor Guard, Gastonia, retired maintenance supervisor for Gaston County Schools after 24 years, former owner and operator of A&D Refrigeration and S&G Crafts, helped organize South Gastonia VFD (now Crowder's Mountain VFD) and built the first fire tanker for the department in the early 1960s.
Gary is survived by his wife Shirley Todd Postell; son, Douglas Edward Postell and wife Deborah of Gastonia; son-in-law, Rick Lanier of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; brothers, Jeffery Postell of Boston, Mass., Samuel Carroll Postell and wife Gail of San Diego, Calif. and Tim Postell of Gasto-nia; sister-in-law, Helen Padgett of Gastonia; stepmother, Nancy Postell of Andrews, N.C.; grandsons, Michael Douglas Postell of Florida, Kevin Wayne Barnhardt and wife Erica of New Bern, N.C., Christopher Blair Postell and wife Aundrea of Gastonia, and Nicholas Kyle Lanier of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; great granddaughter, Madisyn Rhae Barnhardt of New Bern.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Andrea Lynn Lanier; brothers Harry D. Padgett, Hayden Jewel Postell, and Harold Gene Padgett
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Gastonia with Dr. Ray Ammons officiating.
Interment will follow at Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Gastonia with military honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Chris and Aundrea Postell: the family home-stead, 4010 Little Mountain Road, Gastonia, N.C. 28056.
