James Tate

GASTONIA - James Dewey Tate, 85, departed for the Sunday evening service in Heaven on Jan. 20, 2013.

Jim was born Aug. 2, 1927, to Horace Clifton and Hazel Riffey Tate in Washington County Tennessee.

In 1944 he graduated from Hower High School in Akron, OH. Jim was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific until 1946. Jim earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio. He worked as an Engineer for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for 34 years in Akron, OH; Izmet, Turkey, São Paulo, Brazil; and Danville, VA. In Akron, OH Jim & Irene were members of the Akron Baptist Temple. Jim & Irene moved to Gastonia in 1998 where they became members of Parkwood Baptist Church. Jim also was an active participant in Community Bible Studies in Gastonia.

Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Bogart Tate whom he married on April 5, 1952; his son and his son's wife, Randy & Janet Tate of Dayton, OH; and two daughters and their husbands, Karen and the Rev. Allen Harris of Hanover, Pa., and Sharon and Dr. Greg Hardigree of Fish-ersville, Va.; his sister, Margaret Harlan of Gray, Tenn., and two brothers, Denver Tate of Akron, Ohio, and Ronald Tate of San Antonio, Texas along with nine grandchildren and their spouses, Phillip Tate of Dayton, Ohio, Ryan and Kristen Tate of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Kristie (Tate) and Andy Young of Centenial, Colo., Janelle (Harris) and Joshua Franklin of Spring Grove, Pa., Priscilla (Harris) and Caleb LeGrand of Simpsonville, S.C., Kendall and Melyssa Harris of Limerick, Pa., James and Angie Harris of Greenville, S.C., Jeremy Hardigree of Fishersville, Va., and Jordan Hardigree of Fishersville, Va. and nine great-grandchildren, Brielle, Layton, and Hudson Franklin of Spring Grove, Pa.; Ella, Ben and Jadwin Tate of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Isaiah and Ethan Harris of Limerick, Pa., and Jane Young of Centenial, Colo., as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors officiated by Mr. Tate's son, son-in-law, and grandsons.

Interment will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery, in Akron, Ohio.
