GASTONIA - Janet Amis Johnston, 74, of Gastonia, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Robin Johnson Hospice House.
She was born Jan. 14, 1939, in Elgin, Ill., the daughter of the late Raymond Wilburn and Sarah Charlotte Todd Amis.
Janet attended many colleges and universities throughout her educational career, culminating in earning her Ph.D. in early childhood education from the University of Alabama.
She spent her career as an educator with Gaston College, in early childhood education and Hope Lutheran School as curriculum administrator. She was a charter member of Agape Lutheran Church, where she played handbells. She was an active volunteer with Crisis Assistance Ministry, the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels. Janet was an avid gardener and traveler and loved classical music.
Survivors of Mrs. Johnston include her daughter, Cherie Smith; grandchildren, Samantha Sheppard and Wesley Smith; her beloved dog, Tinkerbell, all of Gastonia; and brother, James Amis, of Ocala, Fla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Clark Johnston; and by her sister.
A service to celebrate Janet's life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia with Pastor Brenda Bynum officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held privately for the family.
