Leslie Montgomery

GASTONIA - Leslie Montgomery of 676 Winston Drive, was born on Oct. 9, 1947, to the late Rev. Louis and Juanita Montgomery.

God relieved Leslie of all pain and discomfort to welcome him home on Sept. 3, 2013, after a brief illness.

Leslie graduated from Highland High School in the Class of 1965 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatrical Art and Music from what is now North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. Leslie was a lifelong member and a past youth choir director at Friendship Christian Church. He worked as a hospital administrator in Atlanta, Georgia govern-ment housing authorities in Gastonia, Charlotte, and Durham North Carolina and various other part-time employments. He was a dedicated member of Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where he served as assistant treasurer, also the achievement week chair, nominations and bylaws committees, and the scholarship committee. He was past president of the Highland Class of 1965, current Vice President, Membership Chair, and Thanksgiving Project Chair.

He was a member of the the Highland High School Grand Reunion Committee where he was chair of the Scholarship Committee. Leslie was also a member of Moloch Elks Lodge #468 in Gastonia, North Carolina and Gaston County Organization for Community Concerns, Inc. Leslie was a member of the Gaston Unit NAACP and had recently directed and played two star-ring roles in a play, "Murdered at Church", to make donation to the organization. He was brilliant in both roles as he always was with the numerous roles and characters he portrayed over the years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Dorothy Mason and Loraine Chambers. He leaves to cherish fond memories two children whom he loved dearly. A daughter Billie Ruth Hoyle and a adopted son Robert Baxter; sisters Pauline Montgomery (Johnny) , Florence Garvin, Diane Montgomery; brothers Bernard Montgomery and Sherman Montgomery, and a adopted brother Wendell Thompson and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, lifelong friends, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held noon Saturday at Friendship Christian Church.

Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service.

Internment will be at Gaston Memorial Park.
