Ray Mauney Sr.

Ray Dean Mauney Sr., 78, passed away Nov. 27, 2013, after battling cancer of the esophagus and liver for the past two years.

Born on October 3, 1935 in Cherryville, NC. He was the youngest of five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd L. Mauney.

He graduated from Cherryville High School in 1953. He attended Wake Forest College (now University) on a baseball scholarship. Graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, and a member of the Demon Deacon Baseball Team.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for five years as a soldier, both active duty and in the reserves.

Ray married his high school sweetheart, Marianna Houser on August 18, 1957. They moved to Gainesville GA. where he began his business ca-reer as an Industrial Engineer, Cost Accountant and General Accountant with Milliken and Company. After several promotions and carious moves around the country, Ray left Milliken in 1975 and moved back to Gainesville when he was named Comptroller of Mansfield Oil Co. He held this position until 1980. In early 1980 he was named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Mr. B's Oil Company in Winder, Ga. a posi-tion he held until retirement in 1990.

Not content to sit at home, Ray was tasked with liquidating the assets of Davis Washington Lumber Company. He also continued to work as an independent contractor for Garner and Associates CPA Firm of Atlanta GA. coordinating and conducting financial audits.

Ray was active in the local community as a member of various organizations including the Elks Club, the American Legion and the Chattahoo-chee Country Club. In 1966, he was appointed head of the General Business Central Division of the Gainesville-Hall County Community Chest. He held that same position again in 1967, becoming the first person to be selected twice to that role. He was a former Vice President of the Gainesville Lion's club and was named Lion of the Year in 1968. Also in 1968, he was named Chairman of the Gainesville-Hall County Commu-nity Chest. Ray was a member of the Gainesville First Baptist Church.
Despite his many business accomplishments, Ray will best be remembered for his love and devotion to his family. He was a loving and de-voted husband, father and grandfather. He spent countless hours attending horse shows, golf matches, soccer matches, football and baseball games, school plays and many other activities in support of his three treasured grandchildren.
Ray is preceded in death by his youngest son, William Nelson Mauney; his parents, Floyd L. and Lula B. Mauney; a sister, Ruth Mauney and his brothers Harold Mauney and Robert Mauney.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marianna Houser Mauney of Gainesville; son and daughter in law, Ray D. Mauney, Jr., and Lisa of Cler-mont and their daughter Lauren; daughter and son in law, Melissa and Klay Simpson of Johns Creek and their sons, KJ and Carter Simpson; sister and brother in law, Marie and John Nestlerode of Cherryville, NC; brother and sister in law, Joel and Jo Ann Mauney of Shelby NC; sister in law, Eloise Mauney of Cherryville NC; a very special "MeMe", Evelyn Haynes Kephart and a number of nieces and nephews.

The body was cremated and a celebration of his life was held Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church on Green Street. Dr. Bill Coates officiated. The family received friends in the Church Parlor following the service.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherryville, North Carolina. The family will also receive friends after the service in the Family Life Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Shady Grove Baptist Church, or to the American Cancer.
