MOUNT HOLLY - James L. Blackwell, 87, of 318 Walnut Avenue, died Friday, June 13, 2014.

He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Rev. James Arthur Blackwell and Margaret Iva Lee Dere-berry Blackwell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Banner Hager Blackwell; a sister, Faye B. Gainey. He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran.

He is survived by two children, Roger Blackwell and wife Faye, of Lake Wylie, S.C.; and Donna Simmers and husband Joe, of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother, the Rev. Eugene Blackwell and wife Elizabeth, of Mount Holly; one sister, Senora Grindstaff-Wiens and husband Wayne, of Stanley; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A private family service to celebrate the life of Mr. Blackwell will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly, with the Rev. Mark Etchison and the Rev. Eugene Blackwell officiating, assisted by his sister, Senora Grindstaff-Wiens. A public grave-side service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, with military rites performed by the Gaston County Honor Guard. Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly, is serving the family.
