GASTONIA - The Rev. James Arthur Lowery, 78, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2013, at his home.

He was born March 18, 1934, in Cowpens, S.C., son of the late Paul D. Lowery and Myrtle Lawings Lowery.

The Rev. Lowery was a member of Temple Baptist Church, Gastonia. James pastored for many years in North and South Carolina,
the most re-cent churches he pastored were Chapel Grove Baptist Church, Gastonia for 26 years and Temple Baptist Church, Gastonia for 8 years. He served in the US Navy during the end of the Korean Conflict.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Temple Baptist Church, 701 Littlejohn Street, Gastonia officiated by the Revs. Mike Lowery and Gregg Ballard. Music provided by the Revs. Jonathan Lowery and Scott Whitener.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.

The Rev. Lowery is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Peggy Sligh Lowery of the home; sons, Rev. Mike Lowery and wife Diane of Rock Hill, SC, Rev. Jonathan Lowery and wife Michelle of Charlotte; brother, Ed Lowery and wife Darlene of Charlotte; sister, Betty Cameron and husband Robert of York, SC; grandchildren, Lauren, Katie and Hannah Lowery.

In addition to his parents Rev. Lowery was preceded in death by sister, Doris Deese.
