GASTONIA - William "Bill" Melton Hooper Jr., 65, passed away Nov. 27, 2012, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

A native of Gaston County, he was a son of the late William Melton Hooper Sr. and Rebecca Haffner Hooper.
Bill graduated from Ashley High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam and was a 20 year Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He was cur-rently employed with TCI Mobility. Bill was a member of Myers Memorial United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was a member of United Methodist Men and an original member of the Spontanes. Bill volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, enjoyed woodworking and reading and adored his dog, Woody.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary Loujean Long Hooper; brothers, Sam Hooper and wife Kimberly of Kissimee, Fla., Keith Hooper and wife Susan of Gastonia; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Long McGinnis and husband Dean of Belmont, Marguerite Long Taylor and husband Frank of Gastonia and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Myers Memorial UMC, with the Rev. Clyde K. Penry officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. prior.
Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park.
