ALBEMARLE - Alva Lindsay Rickman Shumate, of Albemarle, passed away peacefully Feb. 14, 2013, at Stanly Manor.

Born May 16, 1925, in Gaston County, Mrs. Shumate was a daughter of the late William A. Lindsay and Elta White Lindsay. She was preceded in death by her sister, Eleanor Ware, of Kings Mountain; and her brother, William Lindsay Jr. of Bessemer City.
Mrs. Shumate was also preceded in death by husband, Raymond Rickman, and by husband, James Shumate. Her eldest son, Dennis White Rickman, who was a resident of Durham, passed away Feb. 21, 2010.
She is survived by her youngest son, Bryan Shumate; daughter-in-law, Tammi Shumate; and granddaughter, Bailey Shumate, all of Albemarle; daughter-in-law, Cathy Rickman; and granddaughter, Abbie, of Durham; her sister, Jann Savage, of Bessemer City; and many nieces and nephews throughout North Carolina.
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Shumate was an area director for the
, making friends and building relationships with patients in need, as well as with volunteers. Many of those connections remained throughout her life. Her dedication and hard work was appreciated by many and was an example for others in the organization.
Visitation will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb., 18, 2013, at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home in Bessemer City, followed by her funeral service at 3 p.m. with Rev. A.A. Bailey officiating. Interment will follow at Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.
