CHARLOTTE - Berry B. Whitley, 89, a resident of Stanley Total Living Center in Stanley, formerly of Charlotte, died Aug.15, 2013.

He was born Sept. 26, 1923, to Elizabeth and L.W. Whitley. He was a US Army veteran, and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism during World War II. His occupation was a housepainter. He was preceded in death by his first wife Claudine Hope Whitley, and his second wife Lois Hubbard Crowe Whitley, a daughter Robin Whitley, a step son Eddie Crowe, two brothers Eugene and Bob, and three sisters Doris, Edith, and Margaret.

Survivors include a son Steve Whitley and wife Sarah of Charlotte, two daughters Brenda Jones and husband Earl of Bryson City, NC, Melanie Coleman and husband Gerald of Sebring, Florida; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; a sister Faye Bumgarner of Delaware, and a brother Carl Whitley of Maryland, and a special great niece Stephanie Hall.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Whitley will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mt. Holly, with Chaplain Ivan Davis and the Rev. Kevin Crumbley officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and other times at 807 East Chestnut St., Stanley.
