CHARLOTTE - Edna Lou Aldrich, 85, died on Jan. 1, 2011 at Southminster Retirement Home, 8919 Park Road.
She was born in Sampson County, a daughter of the late Edwin Turlington Lamb and Fraulein Burch Lamb. She graduated from Ingold High School as valedictorian and from Mars Hill and Meredith College where she majored in English. She taught at Western Junior High in Louisville, Ky. and was coordinator in the Learning Lab of Gas-ton College.
She and her retired Baptist Minister husband, A. Douglas Aldrich, were married for 64 years. She was a supportive part of his full-time ministry at First Baptist, La Fol-lette, Tenn., Forest Hills Baptist, Raleigh, and First Baptist, Gastonia. Since retirement, there have been 11 interim pastorates.
She was active as a Sunday school teacher and missions leader in the local church and served on the State W.M.U. Board. She led conferences for Ministers' wives groups and served as President of NC Baptist Pastors' Wives Conference. She was a member of the Study Club of Gastonia. She loved music and sports, especially Wake Forest University basketball.
Mrs. Aldrich is survived by her husband and two children, Judith Aldrich Planer and her husband, Geoffrey Alan Planer of Gastonia and a son, Joseph Douglas Aldrich and wife Susan Elizabeth Aldrich of Charlotte; sister, Anna Jean Bass (Milton) of Fayetteville; two brothers, Edwin Earl Lamb (Eleanor) of Wilmington, and Bobby Huntley Lamb (Joyce) of Ingold; five grandchildren, Dr. Jonathan Alan Planer and Rose Planer of Belmont, Christopher Douglas Planer of Chapel Hill, Hannah Elizabeth Aldrich, Kathryn Lynn Aldrich and Rachael Palmer Jones all of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held at Myers Park Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4. The family will receive friends in Heaton Hall immediately following the service. The presiding minister will be Dr. H. Stephen Shoemaker, Senior Minister.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Foundation of the Southminster Retirement Home, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210 and The Edna Lou and Douglas Aldrich Scholarship fund at the Wake Forest University Divinity School, P.O. Box 7227, Winston-Salem, NC 27109.
Arrangements for the Aldrich Family are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington/Matthews Chapel.
