GASTONIA - Elizabeth "Lib" Witherspoon Mason, 99, passed away peacefully on April 23.

Born in Salisbury and a lifelong resident of North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John Craig and Elizabeth Witherspoon Mason.

Lib graduated from Queens College and taught for over 40 years at the venerable North Carolina Orthopedic Hospital in Gastonia. Notes of gratitude from students years later attest to her positive impact on many young lives. She was an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Belmont, where she was honored for her long service and commitment by Life Membership in the Women of the Church and a special resolution by the Session of the church. After retirement from teaching, she continued her own education through extensive travel around the world with friends.

In addition to her parents, Lib was preceded in death by her three brothers, Charles E., John C., and William A. Mason, and their wives, and by a niece, Mary Elizabeth Mason Torrence (Mrs. Charlton) and nephews, George Ragan Mason and John Craig Mason, III (wife, Mary Sue Carpen-ter).

Miss Mason is survived by her nieces Edna Carson Mason of Harrisonburg, VA, Carolyn Mason Nowlin and her husband, Preston of Powhatan, VA and Craig Mason and her husband, Daniel Morisak of Whittier, CA; many great- and great-great- nieces and nephews.

Family and friends of Elizabeth Mason are invited to attend her memorial service beginning 11 a.m. Saturday from the Assembly Room at Covenant Village. The Rev. Daria Ragan will officiate.

A private family committal will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont.
