GASTONIA - USAF retired Lt. Col. Eugene Tiddy, 89, passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Cleveland County on March 29, 1923, son of the late James and Anna McGinnis Tiddy.

He was a graduate of University of Maryland and a USAF combat veteran serving during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

During his military career as a pilot, he was the recipient of many medals and citations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel after 28 years of service because of wounds he received in combat during the Vietnam War. He proudly taught AF Junior ROTC at Ashbrook High School before finally retiring.

He was a longtime and active member of both Parkwood Baptist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher and deacon, and the Gastonia Evening Lions Club, where he was a past president and a past district governor of District 31C.

He is survived by two sons, Gary Tiddy, of New Bern, and James "Allen" Tiddy, of Gastonia; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Hazel Allen Tiddy; son, Gerald Manning Tiddy; and sisters, Leona Trexler and Verna Mae Tolleson.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Parkwood Baptist Church with Rev. M.O. Owens officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment, with military honors, will be at Cleveland Memorial Park, Shelby.
