GASTONIA – Helen Smith Carson, 92, died Oct. 25, 2013, at the Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas. Helen was born in Gastonia on July 12, 1921 to the late Giles Tate Smith and Lenora Butts Smith. Helen loved her family, hometown, church, friends, and the Lord.

Helen is survived by daughters, Barbara C. Smith and husband Henry R. of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Libby C. Todd and husband Kenneth F. of Gastonia; four grandchildren, Marianne S. Goolsby and husband Dr. John B., Jennifer S. Wienke and husband Shawn A., all of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Martha T. Edge and husband Justin A. of Gastonia, and Michael K. Todd of Greenville, S.C.; five great-grandchildren, Carson Goolsby, Caroline Goolsby, Mackenzie Edge, Emma Wienke, and Connor Thomas Edge; sisters-in-law, Eleanor C. Smith of Aberdeen, Md., and Dorothy R. Carson of Gastonia; three nephews and two nieces; and also, many very close friends.
Helen was preceded in death by husband of 66 years, Thomas Edgar Carson (Tommy); daughter, Susan Lenora Carson; brothers, Olin Eugene Smith and Dr. James Edgar Smith; brothers-in-law Whitelaw Carson and John McVoy Carson.
Graduate of Gastonia High School, Helen worked during WWII inspecting TNT for ammunition, which made her a member of the Greatest Generation. She also worked for Chavis Textiles and the Orthopedic Hospital.
Helen was a faithful member of First ARP Church for 66 years, working tirelessly as a volunteer. Her special ministry was to send encouraging notes and cards to many family and friends. She loved her church and church friends as well as many who considered her their adopted mother or grandmother.
A memorial service will be held at First ARP Church of Gastonia at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28. Visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall. The family is at the home. Burial will be private.
