GASTONIA -- Mr. Hoyt Clarence Butler Jr., 96, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012 at his residence at Covenant Village in Gastonia.
He was born June 16, 1916 in Shelby, Miss., a son of the late Hoyt Clarence, Sr. and Emma Belle Denson Butler.
Mr. Butler graduated from Delta State Teachers College in 1938 and after serving as a Communications Officer in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, he moved his family to Gastonia. He was an accountant by trade and began his own accounting firm with Mr. Ed Stowe. Known as Butler & Stowe, CPAs, the business is still in operation to this day.
Mr. Butler was a longtime, active member of First Baptist Church of Gastonia where he served several terms on the Finance Committee, was a Deacon, and Youth Sunday School teacher. He was an active member of the Civitan Club for more than 25 years, serving as President of the Noon Civitan Club and as Lt. Governor of North Carolina Civitan. He credits the Boy Scouts with giving him the character and self confidence to take on leadership positions as an adult. He was active in Scouts until age 25 and was an Eagle Scout. Mr. Butler enjoyed golf, water skiing, genealogy, music and travelling.
Survivors of Mr. Butler include his children, Bonnie Matthews and husband Jim of Clinton, N.C.; Dr. Robert H. Butler of Asheboro, N.C.; David A. Butler and wife Gloria of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; H. Douglas Butler of Clover, S.C.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret Robinson of Winona, Miss.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Virginia Walters Butler, by two sisters and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, in the Assembly Room of Covenant Village with Dr. Ray Ammons, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the living room of Covenant Village. A private committal service will be held for the family at Gaston Memorial Park.
