BELMONT - Irvin Thomas Garrett, 88, died peacefully on Jan. 31, 2013, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

A native of Belmont, he was the son of the late David Hicks Garrett Sr. and Carrie Shepherd Garrett.
Irvin was a graduate of Belmont High School and attended Business College in Charlotte. He worked with Matthews Lumber and Queen City Lumber in Charlotte. He was a US WWII Army Veteran and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Belmont.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the church.
A committal service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery with full military rites by the Gaston County Honor Guard.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Samuel P. Warner and Daria L. Ragan officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Tate Garrett; stepdaughter, Karen Abrams of Cramerton; step grandchildren, Jason, Stephanie, Shawn and Jennifer; four step great-grandchildren; brothers, William H. Garrett of Belmont, David H. Garrett and wife, Ruby of Mount Holly; sister, Irene Wyant and hus-band Fred of Belmont; brother-in-law, Howard Tate and wife, Martha of Chapel Hill.
