BELMONT - Jack Vernon Abernethy, 92, died April 28, 2009, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late George Patrick and Agnus Bertha Mae Cloninger Abernethy.
Private services were held on Wednesday.

Mr. Abernethy was a member of First Baptist Church of Belmont, where he was very active. He served as Secretary of Sunday School for many years and was a Sunday school teacher, just to name a few. He was a WW II Marine Corps Veteran, where he served in the Pacific. He owned several H & R Block offices and was a stock broker. He was president of Belmont Optimist and Lieutenant Governor of the Optimist Club of NC.

Survivors include three daughters; one son; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vilanta Jackson Abernethy.
