HICKORY - Jack Mauney Cloninger, 81, passed away on June 15, 2012 at the Brian Nursing Center in Hickory.

He was born Feb. 11, 1931, and raised in Gaston County.

He was the son of the late Carl and Lola Lewis Cloninger of Dallas Jack was a graduate of Dallas High School, Lenoir Rhyne College and got his degree in Radio & 'l`.V. & Motion Pictures at UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Jack and his wife, Sally, lived in McLean, Virginia for many years and both worked for the state department where they had the opportunity to travel and on occasion reside in several countries during their working years. Upon their retirement they moved to Hickory.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carlton Lewis Cloninger of Dallas.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sally Duncan Cloninger of Hickory, a brother, Johnny Mack Cloninger and wife Geraldine Ballew Cloninger, a sister-in-law, Coleen Harwell Cloninger Peeler, and husband, Jerry Lee Peeler, nephew, David Carlton Cloninger and wife, Ruth Shelton Cloninger, a niece, Carla Rose Cloninger Hall and husband, Cullin Hall Sr., all of Dallas, a nephew, John Gregory Cloninger and wife Dawne Houck Cloninger of Lex-ington, S.C. and several great nieces and great nephews.

The Cloninger family was served by The Bass-Smith Funeral Home of Hickory.
