GASTONIA - Jacob "Jake" George Hord Jr., 79, of Gastonia, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 16, 1933, in Cleveland County, a son of the late Jacob George Sr. and Mary Edna Ware Hord.

Jake earned his B.S., M.A., and Ed.S degrees from Appalachian State University. He served his country in the Army National Guard. Jake was a lifelong educator in Gaston County both as a teacher and administrator with several schools. He was the principal of Gardner Park Elementary for 28 years prior to his retirement. During this time, he earned "Principal of the Year" honors in Gaston County twice. Jake continued his education by completing the Principal's Executive Program at UNC-Chapel Hill and by participating in the Leadership Gaston Program. After his tenure at Gardner Park, he was headmaster of the Lower School at Gaston Day School and facility inspector with Gaston County Schools.

Jake was also very active in the community. He was a longtime, active member of Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a church leader of various committees, Friendly Class Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. He was NCEA president of Gaston County, served the Gaston YMCA Board was chief of YMCA Indian Guides of the Tuscarora Nation, member of the Optimist Club and the ASU Alumni Council.

Survivors of Mr. Hord include his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Lou Patrick Hord, of Gastonia; daughter, Jamie Hord Smith and husband, Mike, of Hickory; son, Jacob G. Hord III "Tripp" of Gastonia; grandchildren, Justin Smith, Patrick Smith, Jacob Hord IV and Bradley Hord; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Patty Hord of Altoona, Pa.; sister, Maxine Bennett of Kings Mountain; sister-in-law and husband, Diane and Larry Wood Sr. of Gastonia; brother-in-law and wife, John Patrick Jr. and Karen of Charlotte; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church.

A service to celebrate Jake's life will be 1 p.m., Tuesday at Bradley Memorial UMC, with the Rev. Eric Reece officiating.
Interment will follow the service at Gaston Memorial Park.
