BESSEMER CITY - Dr. James Albert Ellis, 83, passed away Aug. 28, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 25, 1929, in Gaston County, son of the late Ellard L. Ellis and Elvie Parton Ellis.

Dr. Ellis was the Founder and Director of the Fundamental Baptist Home Missions in Bessemer City for 31 years. He pastored Parkdale Baptist Church for 13 years and also pastored Harvest Baptist Church in Bessemer City for 13 years. He was a mission's pastor for several area churches and a member of Heaven Bound Baptist Church, Bessemer City.

Mr. Ellis was a past president of the Bessemer City Chamber of Commerce and had also been named the Bessemer City Citizen of the Year. He was a member of the Bessemer City Lions Club.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Heaven Bound Baptist Church, 428 Costner School Rd., Bessemer City officiated by the Revs. Jason Moore, Don Sessions, Mitchell Griffin and Rick Baker.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the church, and at other times at the home.

Interment will be at Westview Gardens, Bessemer City.

Dr. Ellis is survived by: his loving wife of over 65 years, Lucille Best Ellis; son, Steve Ellis and wife Cynthia; daughter, Marie Stewart and husband Jack; brother in-law, Garrison Best Jr.; sisters-in-law, Germaine Ellis and Eileen Best; grandchildren, Jaclyn Stewart, Sherri Hart and husband Spruce, Darryl Stewart and wife Tammy, Michael McCoin, Casey Cearley; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Samuel Hart, Blaine, Cameron and Austin Stewart; great-great-grandchild, Alayna Harrilal.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: brothers, Alonzo, Monroe, Elondus, Londus, Edison and David Ellis; sister, Evelynn Sellers; grandson, Michael Ellis.

Memorials may be sent to the Fundamental Baptist Home Missions to continue his life's ministry at P.O. Box 1510 Bessemer City, NC 28016.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Donna Matherley, Lisa Bradshaw and Callie Horne of Gaston Hospice.
