GASTONIA - Johnny "John Boy" Ray Cowan, 73, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2013.

He was a native of Burke County, born Jan. 18, 1940, to the late Frank and Martha Cowan.

In addition to his parents Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Janet "Sweetie" Cowan; brothers Al Cowan and Frank Cowan; and sisters Olan Stepp, Polly Stevens, and Margaret Ottaway.

Survivors include his daughter Janie Cowan Murph of Lenoir; son Johnny Ray Cowan, Jr. of Tarboro; sisters Evelyn Ellington of Waynesville, Mary Arrowood of Morganton, and Edith Cole of Clyde; several grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park is assisting the Cowan family with arrangements.
